After the success of Frozen Planet in 2011, we jump forward eleven years to find the second series has landed. Sir David Attenborough is back exploring the frozen wildernesses across our beautiful planet.

As we watched the first episode last week, we got to thinking about the problems we face with the climate crisis. Watching these beautiful vistas, dare devil penguins and ruthless killer wales, it can be easy to forget that these habitats are under threat from warming temperatures. Unlike the first series, this new second series has set out to highlight climate change impact on our frozen places.

This year has been one of the warmest on record with droughts declared in many areas and intense fires raging in places like California, southern France, Spain and even Norfolk and Yorkshire. So, with all this heat how threatened are these icy locations?

A Chilling Introduction

During the introduction to the new series, Sir David Attenborough said: “But, just as we’re beginning to understand its wildlife, we’re recognising an alarming truth. Our frozen wildernesses are disappearing at faster rates than ever before. Never has it been more important to understand what is going on in these icy territories.”

Sir David is so right. One huge concern highlighted brilliantly in an article in the Guardian in August this year is the melting Greenland ice cap which experts believe will lead to inevitable sea level rises of around 27cm.

This type of rise is shocking. Even if the burning of fossil fuels were to end overnight, it’s too late to stop 110 trillion tonnes of ice melting and causing a rise in sea levels of up to a few metres in places. This puts millions of lives at risk with up to two billion people living in low lying coastal areas. The numbers and scale of the crisis is shocking!

Time To Act

With these doom-laden predictions beginning to stick in our minds and hit home, it’s time to act. It may be too late to stop the inevitable from happening but there is still an opportunity to limit the damage by changing how we live, consume and deal with the waste we create.

Frozen Planet II is a must watch series. It creates a really clear argument that we have lots to do to ensure we do not lose these beautiful frozen places. If Sir David can’t change minds, there is no hope!
